For teams who convincingly dominate their regions, the regional tournament is typically nothing more than a tune-up to ensure everything is clicking before the Big Dance in Sarasota. For teams on the bubble, Regionals is an all-out, tooth-and-nail brawl for the remaining bids.

However, 2008 regional tournaments across the country have already proven to be more than interesting, with some typical powerhouses and perennial tourney favorites joining the ranks of the bubble teams clawing for that elusive bid to nationals. One example is Furious George, a team who has uncontestedly secured a nationals bid for as long as anyone can remember and won the whole thing just five years ago, falling on a spectacular grab on universe point to an ever-stronger Jam, who themselves surprisingly missed out on a bid two years ago.

This just goes to show that any year, any titan can (and will) fall, to the glee of their rivals. This weekend, Madcow hopes to fell those titans.

On polo fields just outside of Milwaukee in quiet North Lake, WI, a fierce showdown of unprecedented proportion will take place as Madcow battles other regional contenders for one of the two golden tickets to Sarasota.

Be sure to follow along with our live updates or our Twitter feed. It's gonna be a bloodbath, and not the kind that Jeffy takes in the morning.

Tournament Recap

September 6-7 Madcow traveled to Naperville, IL for Chicago Heavyweight Championships.

Day 1: Saturday

Game 1- 8:45

Madcow's first game was against the #3 seed in our pool, Phoenix, who was only ranked one spot below us in the overall seeding.  The fields were a little wet but the weather was perfect for ultimate. We came out strong on offense and then scored 4 breaks in a row to go up 5-0. We continued to play well and took half 8-2. After half, Phoenix scored on offense and then proceeded to get their first break of the game. Phoenix scored a few more breaks to bring the game to 10-6. With a few key offensive players missing, others had to step in to fill their roles and there seemed to be some communication errors. We finished out the game strong on defense and the final score was Madcow 13-Phoenix 9.

Get Fired Up, Cow!

by Edelman :: September 2, 2008 10:09 PM

Great practice tonight everyone. Starting tonight (or whenever you read this post), start preparing your body for the weekend. It's going to be a competitive tournament with a lot of good competition, so you can start by doing a few things:

  1. Get some sleep. Your most important night to get some sleep is Thursday night. And tell her to go home. Cuddling is for the weak, and it just keeps you up.
  2. Eat right. While it may have served you well in the past, the typical Mountain Dew and hotdogs diet just won't cut it for the elite athlete you tell everyone you are. I don't care if you think it's your "fuel" it's not. Random pork parts, leftover beef scraps, and rat poo are not good sources of protein. Eat a banana, a turkey sandwich, and some yogurt.
  3. Drink right. While you should have stopped getting drunk about two months ago, the week of a tournament is definitely not the time to be consuming alcohol. How about this: every time you get the urge to just get wasted man, pretend that the water in your Nalgene is Natty. They taste pretty much the same, and if you try hard enough, you can even convince yourself they are. Start getting hydrated as soon as possible. You need to be peeing Evian by Friday night.
  4. Keep exercising/working out. We're looking to peak around Regionals/Nationals, and this tournament is neither. Remember what TimmyT said about training and how you lose about 15-20% of yesterday's stamina if you don't work out today. Don't sissy out either if you have to do them yourself. If you need motivation, imagine that TLake will sing showtunes and pop songs in your ear indefinitely if you don't put out a full effort. This works for me, but you can come up with your own.
  5. Most of all, get mentally prepared. Do whatever you need to do to get yourself psyched up for the weekend. While a team like Sockeye can be intimidating as is, imagine how much more intimidating they are when they're warming up hard and focused. It is much harder to beat a team that is mentally focused, prepared, and jacked up than a team that is just lazy and aloof. Take after the Cleveland Moose Swallow and make yourself look big (but not too big).

This weekend we play our game, and we make other teams play our game. We finish games that we're supposed to finish, and we come up in the clutch on universe point. We've already proven we're one of the "big boys" in this sport. Now it's time to play like one.

It's gametime, Cow.

PS I <3 cuddling.
