September 6-7 Madcow traveled to Naperville, IL for Chicago Heavyweight Championships.

Day 1: Saturday

Game 1- 8:45

Madcow's first game was against the #3 seed in our pool, Phoenix, who was only ranked one spot below us in the overall seeding.  The fields were a little wet but the weather was perfect for ultimate. We came out strong on offense and then scored 4 breaks in a row to go up 5-0. We continued to play well and took half 8-2. After half, Phoenix scored on offense and then proceeded to get their first break of the game. Phoenix scored a few more breaks to bring the game to 10-6. With a few key offensive players missing, others had to step in to fill their roles and there seemed to be some communication errors. We finished out the game strong on defense and the final score was Madcow 13-Phoenix 9.

Game 2- 10:40

Our second game was against the #1 overall seed in the tournament and regional opponent, Sub Zero. After a long first point with three turnovers, we got broken and went down 0-1. Sub Zero took half 8-4. It became even clearer that there were some miscommunication problems with the offense and Sub took advantage of them. In the second half we traded points with Sub until 13-7. Our defense got a break to bring the game to 13-8, and then Sub Zero scored and then broke us for the game winning score.  The game ended Madcow 8- Sub Zero 15.

Game 3- 12:35

After a disappointing loss to Sub Zero, we had to shake off the previous game and play Team X/Ballerado, the #4 seed in our pool. It was apparent that our heads were not in the game, because Team X quickly went up 4-0 on us. We took a timeout to collect ourselves and get things straightened out. After that, our offense scored and our defense went on a roll.  We went on an 8-2 run and with a sick D by Jeff Meyers, Cow took half 8-6. We continued to play strong throughout the second half and the game ended with the cap, Madcow 12- Team X 8.

Bye Round -2:30

During our bye round several players went to watch and cheer on other teams, i.e. Joyce, Hellbenders, Jawbone, Zoi, while others lavished themselves with massages and other shenanigans.

Game 4- 4:25

After our round 4 bye, we were set to play the #5 seed in our pool, Grit. The mood in the beginning was very lackadaisical and it seemed as if everyone was already putting a check in the win column before the game even started.  We came out slow on offense and had trouble converting turnovers on defense. We went down two breaks early and Grit eventually took half 8-7. After some heated “disagreements” in the first half between teammates and a showing of some strong emotions, we got fired up in the second half. We went on an 8-2 run in the second half and won the game, Madcow 15- Grit 10. The win secured us the #2 seed in our pool and a ticket to play Machine in the quarters of the championship bracket on Sunday. We had had lost to Machine earlier this year on universe point in the quarter finals of Chesapeake Open and wanted some redemption.

Day 2: Sunday (Day of the Cow)

Game 1-10:35

Our first game on Sunday was against Machine, another major regional opponent and the #2 seed in the tournament. We came out with fire and scored on offense and then broke them to go up 2-0. Machine then scored on offense and returned the favor by breaking us to tie the game at 2-2. We traded points and were up 6-5. Machine tied the game at 6-6 and then rolled off 2 breaks to take half 8-6. We started the second half on defense and Machine went up 9-6. Throughout the second half we traded points with Machine. Whenever we would get a break, they would answer back with one of their own. Rodger had a sick layout D and got his head sandwiched between the disc on the ground and the offensive player’s entire body. He went out with an injury and had a pretty big gash near his eye and had the mark of the disc on his face for the rest of the day. Machine took the game at the cap, Machine 14-Madcow 10. We’ll just have to wait until Regionals to get our win against Machine.

Game 2-12:25

After losing our game to Machine we dropped down to the 5th place bracket where we were matched up to play San Diego United. We came out strong against SD United and went up 5-2.  Then SD came back and broke us several times. SD United took half 8-6. During the half-time Biggs talked about flipping the switch which we were able to do in two of the games on Saturday in which we were down. During the second half Biggs and Jeff Meyers started assigning people on the sideline someone on the field to talk to on defense. That combined with the new M O O! and C U D! cheers, everyone got fired up and we found our switch.  We came out solid on offense and intense on defense. The final score was Madcow 15 - SD United 12.

Game 3- 2:15

Our final game on Sunday was against another team in our Region, Prairie Fire. They are a new team out of Kansas City, consisting of several former members of the Van Buren Boys. We started out the game well and got a few breaks in the first half but Prairie Fire managed to get a couple of their own. We took half 7-5. Throughout the second half we would go up a break or two, and then they would answer back. The game went to double game point, 12-12 and we were receiving. We put the final point in and secured 5th place.

Overall, Chicago Heavyweight Championships was a good tournament for Madcow. With a few key players missing from our offense, it was apparent that there is much room for improvement.  Defensively we played very well this weekend, but we had way too many turnovers when we would get a D. We often looked to jack a huck right off the bat when we were easily beating them on the in cuts.

The M.A.D. jersey was awarded to Jeff Meyers, who played phenomenal defense all weekend and most importantly was a leader and got the team fired up and ready to go.

The C.O.W. jersey was not awarded to anyone this weekend because the captains felt that there were too many mistakes on offense and no one performed exceptionally well.

Next tournament: East Plains Sectionals
